Laws related to mass media include print and audio/visual broadcast medium, while film law deals films and advertisements.
Print Media
Indian constitution has provided the ‘freedom of press’ as a fundamental right. However, there are laws which regulate the print media such as News paper(price and pages) Act, Delivery of Books and Newspapers Act, Press Council Act etc.
Broadcast Media
This media was previously under government control. Later supreme court emphasized on the right of every citizen to telecast or broadcast any important event through electronic media, television or radio. However, the broadcast code is adapted by all broadcast media for maintaining quality, decency and sensitivity of content.
Film
Indian Film Industry, is one of the largest producers of motion pictures in the world. The various activities such as production, distribution and exhibition of movies in India is regulated by different acts. Cinematographers Act for censorship, Copyright Act, Cine Workers and Theatre workers Regulation and Employment Act and many more act are associated with films law. Intellectual Property laws play significant role in film business as the work of creative nature.
Advertising
Advertisement is a combination of art and facts. Since advertisement mostly done for attracting consumers, truthfulness and ethics are important. Advertising Standards Council of India is established for enforcing ethical regulating code on advertisements.
